Tour Description

Crater Lake and Cascades Bicycle Tour map

We ride deep into Oregon’s rugged and forested wilds, alongside cascading rivers, over breathtaking mountain passes, through high desert ranchland, and around majestic Crater Lake, North America’s most spectacular lake on this fantastic bicycle tour.  We experience some of the most dramatic scenery and picturesque roads that Oregon has to offer.  Crater Lake National Park, volcanic peaks, secluded backcountry lanes, spectacular waterfalls, and the lively town of Bend are the highlights of this trip.  Plus, we eat great food, experience Oregon’s world famous brewpub scene, and stay in cozy inns, riverside cottages, and the historic Crater Lake Park Lodge along the way.

This is a dream ride for cyclists who love gorgeous scenery and don’t mind a climb to get it.  We follow eight designated scenic routes and circumnavigate Crater Lake, selected by Bicycle Magazine as one of the top rides in the US.

Day 0 - Introductions

We begin our Crater Lake and Scenic Cascades bicycle tour the evening before our first day of riding. We meet at 5:00pm in Cottage Grove for introductions and a guide presentation of your upcoming adventure. A tasty, relaxing, hearty dinner will follow at Stacy’s Covered Bridge Restaurant before we head to the Best Western Cottage Grove Inn for our overnight stay. Rest well. We have a big day tomorrow.

Route Details:

Today, day six of our bicycle tour, we ride the rim road of Crater Lake, deemed by Bicycling Magazine as one of the best bike rides in America.  As we begin the ride, don’t be surprised if you are drawn in to the frequent pullouts to gaze down at the deep crystal clear blue water and the enchanted and aptly named Wizard Island.  Near the halfway point, we dismount our bikes and hike down a steep mile-long trail to Cleetwood Cove, the only lake access, for a picnic lunch and perhaps a chilly swim (if you dare) before boarding a boat for an unforgettable Crater Lake Park Ranger narrated cruise around the lake.   After our voyage, our legs will get a good warm-up as we hike back up the trail to the rim.  If you prefer to end the ride at this point, our van will shuttle you back to the lodge where you can embark on a magnificent hike or simply relax and absorb the views from the lodge patio.  For the full route riders, we continue along the East Rim Road with a steady climb up to the Cloudcap Viewpoint, the highest point on the rim, followed by an exhilarating but rugged downhill to the Phantom Ship Overlook.  After another long ascent and descent we pass the magical Vidae Falls.  One small climb, followed by a larger climb up to the rim and we arrive back at the lodge. Tonight we enjoy another great dinner at the lodge.
