Tour Description

Crater Lake and Cascades Bicycle Tour map

We ride deep into Oregon’s rugged and forested wilds, alongside cascading rivers, over breathtaking mountain passes, through high desert ranchland, and around majestic Crater Lake, North America’s most spectacular lake on this fantastic bicycle tour.  We experience some of the most dramatic scenery and picturesque roads that Oregon has to offer.  Crater Lake National Park, volcanic peaks, secluded backcountry lanes, spectacular waterfalls, and the lively town of Bend are the highlights of this trip.  Plus, we eat great food, experience Oregon’s world famous brewpub scene, and stay in cozy inns, riverside cottages, and the historic Crater Lake Park Lodge along the way.

This is a dream ride for cyclists who love gorgeous scenery and don’t mind a climb to get it.  We follow eight designated scenic routes and circumnavigate Crater Lake, selected by Bicycle Magazine as one of the top rides in the US.

Day 0 - Introductions

We begin our Crater Lake and Scenic Cascades bicycle tour the evening before our first day of riding. We meet at 5:00pm in Cottage Grove for introductions and a guide presentation of your upcoming adventure. A tasty, relaxing, hearty dinner will follow at Stacy’s Covered Bridge Restaurant before we head to the Best Western Cottage Grove Inn for our overnight stay. Rest well. We have a big day tomorrow.

Crater Lake and Cascades Bicycle Tour elevation map, Day 5

Day five of our Crater Lake and Scenic Cascades bike tour begins with a shuttle south to the tiny town of Chiloquin, home of the Klamath Tribes.  We start our ride by heading west into the wetlands of Klamath Lake and Agency Lake, a stopping point for 80% of the migratory birds on the Pacific Flyway. Arriving at the shores of Agency Lake, we turn north toward Fort Klamath and join the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway.  We are in a broad picturesque grassy valley flanked by gorgeous mountains on both sides with the remains of Mt. Mazama (Crater Lake) beckoning us  northward as we glide easily through this flat terrain.  We stop for lunch near the border of Crater Lake National Park.  Climbing begins here, although nothing too strenuous as we follow the amazingly sculpted ash gorge of Annie Creek Canyon up to the park’s south entrance.  A final two mile steep push gets us to the rim and our first view of Crater Lake.  The view is breathtaking and is one you will never forget.  This is the deepest lake in America and the ninth deepest and one of the clearest lakes in the world.  A few pedal strokes later, we arrive at our destination, the rustic and magnificent Crater Lake Lodge perched on the crater rim overlooking the lake nearly 2,000 feet below.  We enjoy a special dinner at the lodge tonight and celebrate our arrival.
