Tour Description

Crater Lake and Scenic Oregon Bicycle Tour map

We hit two of the top Oregon bicycling bucket list routes on this fantastic tour, the rugged Wild Rivers section of the Oregon Coast and Crater Lake National Park. We cycle along side the Pacific Ocean, enjoying picture-perfect cliffside vistas, lighthouses, isolated beach coves, tide pools, rock monoliths, powerful waves, and old growth temperate rain forests running right down to the beach. To top off our awe-inspiring coastal experience, we cycle through majestic redwood groves containing some of the biggest trees on earth. But we are not finished yet. A few days later, after traversing Southern Oregon’s charming wine country, we gaze down at one of the deepest, clearest, bluest lakes in the world as we ride around Crater Lake, one of the most memorable bicycle routes in America.  Plus, we eat great food, enjoy the entertaining town of Ashland, attend a play, and stay in comfortable hotels, riverside cabins, and the rustic Crater Lake Lodge along the way.

If you want gorgeous scenery and don’t mind putting on some mileage, this ride is for you.(1) We follow five designated scenic routes including a circumnavigation of Crater Lake, selected by Bicycle Magazine as one of the top rides in the US.

Day 0 - Introductions

We begin our Crater Lake and Oregon Coast bicycle tour in Cottage Grove, Oregon.(2) We meet in the afternoon for a 1 hour shuttle to coastal town of Reedsport. Crater Lake Scenic Oregon Coast Day 7

Route Details:

Today, day seven, is one of the highlights of the Crater Lake and Oregon Coast Bicycle Tour. We ride the rim road of Crater Lake, deemed by Bicycling Magazine as one of the best bike rides in America. Take your time on this ride. Allow yourself to be drawn into the frequent pullouts to gaze down at the deep crystal clear blue water and the enchanting and aptly named Wizard Island, or cast a glance away from the lake at the spectacular volcanic peaks that dot the horizon. It is scenic bliss in every direction, but we do have to earn it. There is nary a flat spot on this loop and our lungs will begin to feel the 7,000 foot altitude with our first of four big climbs today. A picnic lunch awaits us near the halfway point of the ride. For those with energy to spare, pack your lunch, park your bike, and hike down a steep 1.2 mile trail to Cleetwood Cove. It is the only spot to access the lake, and if you are super adventurous, go for a chilly swim before trekking back up the trail. Remounting our bikes, we begin a steady climb up to Cloudcap Viewpoint, the highest point on the rim. From here it is an exhilarating downhill to Phantom Ship Overlook. After another long ascent and descent we pass the magical Vidae Falls. Two climbs later we arrive back at the rim to complete our loop. Tonight we enjoy another great dinner at the historic Crater Lake Lodge.
