Tour Description

Crater Lake and Scenic Oregon Bicycle Tour map

We hit two of the top Oregon bicycling bucket list routes on this fantastic tour, the rugged Wild Rivers section of the Oregon Coast and Crater Lake National Park. We cycle along side the Pacific Ocean, enjoying picture-perfect cliffside vistas, lighthouses, isolated beach coves, tide pools, rock monoliths, powerful waves, and old growth temperate rain forests running right down to the beach. To top off our awe-inspiring coastal experience, we cycle through majestic redwood groves containing some of the biggest trees on earth. But we are not finished yet. A few days later, after traversing Southern Oregon’s charming wine country, we gaze down at one of the deepest, clearest, bluest lakes in the world as we ride around Crater Lake, one of the most memorable bicycle routes in America.  Plus, we eat great food, enjoy the entertaining town of Ashland, attend a play, and stay in comfortable hotels, riverside cabins, and the rustic Crater Lake Lodge along the way.

If you want gorgeous scenery and don’t mind putting on some mileage, this ride is for you.(1) We follow five designated scenic routes including a circumnavigation of Crater Lake, selected by Bicycle Magazine as one of the top rides in the US.

Day 0 - Introductions

We begin our Crater Lake and Oregon Coast bicycle tour in Cottage Grove, Oregon.(2) We meet in the afternoon for a 1 hour shuttle to coastal town of Reedsport. After we check into the Best Western Salbasgeon Inn, we rendezvous for a guide presentation of your upcoming adventure. A tasty, relaxing, hearty dinner will follow at the Harbor Light Family Restaurant.

  1. Portions of this route are on Coastal Highway 101. We may encounter significant traffic. Morning fog is common and may delay ride start times.
  2. Via Bike Tours provides shuttle service from Ashland Oregon and Eugene Oregon to our meeting spot in Cottage Grove.

Crater Lake Scenic Oregon Coast Day 5

Route Details:

An optional rest day awaits us on day five of our Crater Lake and Scenic Oregon Coast Bicycle Tour.* Relaxing and taking in the sites, shops, spas, galleries, restaurants, or a matinee play in Ashland may be more enticing than a ride today for some. For those looking for something more active, consider hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, white water rafting the Rogue River, or renting a mountain bike for a downhill adrenaline rush from Mt. Ashland back to town.

For those inclined to get back on the road bike today, we have a truly spectacular route. The Cascades-Siskiyou Scenic Bikeway begins and ends in Ashland. We start with a gradual climb to the tranquil Emigrant Lake with wide open vistas of the Cascade and Siskiyou mountains we are about to climb. Our ascent begins in the oak and grass covered foothills and follows a twisting route up to a coniferous forest high above us. Just after our first summit, we reach the Green Springs Inn, a perfect spot to grab a snack or lunch before we continue our next climb on a single lane county road to the picturesque Hyatt Lake with the volcanic peak of Mt. McLaughlin providing a postcard-worthy backdrop. A quick few miles later, including a short, screaming downhill, we emerge onto Howard Prairie with its own, larger high mountain lake and fields of wild flowers. We have one final climb followed by a long, magnificent downhill with vistas of the Rogue Valley, Pilot Rock, Mount Ashland, and the Siskiyou Mountains in the background.

Back in Ashland, you may consider an afternoon nap. Tonight, after a rewarding dinner, we enjoy a play at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

* Today’s breakfast, dinner, and an evening Oregon Shakespeare Festival Play are covered by the Via Bike Tours fee. All other costs, including lunch, are at your own expense.
