Tour Description

Crater Lake and Scenic Oregon Bicycle Tour map

We hit two of the top Oregon bicycling bucket list routes on this fantastic tour, the rugged Wild Rivers section of the Oregon Coast and Crater Lake National Park. We cycle along side the Pacific Ocean, enjoying picture-perfect cliffside vistas, lighthouses, isolated beach coves, tide pools, rock monoliths, powerful waves, and old growth temperate rain forests running right down to the beach. To top off our awe-inspiring coastal experience, we cycle through majestic redwood groves containing some of the biggest trees on earth. But we are not finished yet. A few days later, after traversing Southern Oregon’s charming wine country, we gaze down at one of the deepest, clearest, bluest lakes in the world as we ride around Crater Lake, one of the most memorable bicycle routes in America.  Plus, we eat great food, enjoy the entertaining town of Ashland, attend a play, and stay in comfortable hotels, riverside cabins, and the rustic Crater Lake Lodge along the way.

If you want gorgeous scenery and don’t mind putting on some mileage, this ride is for you.(1) We follow five designated scenic routes including a circumnavigation of Crater Lake, selected by Bicycle Magazine as one of the top rides in the US.

Crater Lake Scenic Oregon Coast Day 3

Route Details:

Day three of our Crater Lake and Oregon Coast Bicycle Tour captures the best of the wild coast all within a single day of riding. We start today’s grand adventure with a warm-up climb to Cape Sebastian, the highest point on our coastal route. We glide downhill from here for a cruise along the expansive and pristine white sands of Pistol River Beach. The setting becomes even more delightful as we ride through Samuel H. Boardman State Park on a 12 mile long designated scenic corridor. It is a thickly forested, steep, and rugged coastline with sea stacks, tide pools, and small secluded sand beaches. There are numerous short bluff trails that lead to outstanding views of Thunder Rock Cove, Secret Beach, NaturalBridges, Spruce Island, and many more. We leave the park with a sweet downhill into Brookings. This is an ideal stop for lunch.* We continue our ride south out of Brookings and into California on the lightly traveled farm roads of the “Easter Lily capital of the World,” where 95% of Easter lilies for the potted plant market are grown. The flora changes dramatically as we turn inland to ride along the Smith River and into Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park. Soon, giant redwood sentinels greet us as we ride through groves of redwoods so close to the road that we can touch the trees as we wheel by. A few miles into the park, we dismount our bikes and stroll through a grove on foot. It is a hushed and serene setting, with enormous trees rising through the dark forest understory into brilliantly backlit foliage. You will be astounded by the sheer majesty of the place. Take your time, relax, and soak up the setting. From here it is 8 miles to Crescent City, our final destination for the day.

* The cost of lunch today is not covered by Via Bike Tours, leaving you the option of where and when you want to eat. Your guides will provide recommendations.
